B.A (Hons) In English Literature M.A In English Literature e-mail: [email protected] 1, Proper Noun: A Proper noun is a noun that identifies a particular person, place, thing or event. # Example: Rahim, Karim, Dhaka City, Monday, Tejgaon college, Eid-ul-fitre etc ** Note:- In written English , proper noun begins with a capital letter. 2. Common Noun: A Common noun is a noun which refers to people or things in common or general. # Example: Country, city, school, day, dress, pen, phone, tv etc. 3. Collective Noun: A Collective Noun is a noun which refers to group of people or things together. # Example: Audience, family, government, team, jury, teachers, students etc ** Note:- In American English ,most collective nouns are treated as singular with a singular verb. e.g. ÔThe whole family is at the tableÓ. In British English, most collective nouns are treated as plural with a plural verb. e.g.ÕThe whole family are at the tableÓ. 4. Material Noun: A Material noun is a noun which refers to people and things that exist physically and can be seen, touched, smelled, heard or tasted. # Example: Coffee, building, tree, tea, rice, rain, flower, beach, music etc. 5. Abstract Noun: An Abstract Noun is a noun which refers to ideas, qualities and conditions of things that cannot be seen or touched and things which have no physical reality . # Example: Truth, danger, happiness, time, friendship, humour etc.
