প্রতিটি ভাষার মতো ইংরেজী ভাষা ও তার ব্যবহারেও চলছে অবিরাম পরিবর্তন। যে শব্দটি গত দশকে একরকম অর্থ প্রকাশ করত, আজ হয়ত সময়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তার অর্থে এসেছে সূক্ষ্ম কিছু পরিবর্তন। একটি কথা বা ভাব আগে আমরা যেসব শব্দ দিয়ে প্রকাশ করতাম, আজ হয়ত সেটাই বলছি অন্য শব্দ দিয়ে। তাই আমরা আজ কিছু প্রচলিত Idioms নিয়ে আলোচনা করব।
1. A blessing in disguise -a good thing that seemed bad at first
• Losing that job turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him as it forced him to plunge into business.
2. A dime a dozen - Something common
• ÒThose antique dishes are pretty, but they’re a dime a dozen.Ó
3. Beat around the bush - Avoid saying what you mean, usually because it is uncomfortable
• Don’t beat around the bush and tell me frankly what you think of my proposition.
4. Better late than never - Better to arrive late than not to come at all
• ~ “Dan finally paid me the money he owed me.” ~ “Well, better late than never.”
5. Bite the bullet - To get something over with because it is inevitable
• The lazy man decided to bite the bullet and start exercising, so he joined a gym.
6. Break a leg - Good luck
• Well-wishers typically say “Break a leg” to actors and musicians before they go on stage to perform.
7. Call it a day - Stop working on something
• The boss was mad because Tom called it a day at noon and went home.
8. Cut somebody some slack - Don’t be so critical
• ~”Andrew’s late again.” ~”Cut him some slack - his wife just had a baby.”
9. Cutting corners - Doing something poorly in order to save time or money
• The authority cut corners when they built the school with bad materials, and put everyone in danger.
10. Easy does it - Slow down
• I was on the back of Suzie’s motorbike and she was going really fast, so I said “Easy does it!”
